Global Warming

On Project Thin Ice

In recent years, "reduce, reuse and recycle" has become as popular as "stop, drop and roll." If we all do what we can in our daily lives to combat global warming, it can add up to a very big step in the right direction. More importantly, it will send a message to a government that refuses to act, that this issue is something Americans care about. Get started with these helpful tips.

Global Warming in the News

Climate change could cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, scientists say

July 4, 2006 DENNIS BUECKERT , Canadian Press

OTTAWA (CP) - So the warnings of harsher heat waves, stronger hurricanes and rising seas fail to impress. How about volcanic eruptions in the Arctic, or a tsunami off the coast of Newfoundland?

The latest scientific discipline to enter the fray over global warming is geology. And the forecasts from some quarters are dramatic - not only will the earth shake, it will spit fire.

A number of geologists say glacial melting due to climate change will unleash pent-up pressures in the Earth's crust, causing extreme geological events such as earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.

The Environment and Social Responsibility

Costa Rica Nature Adventures believes that responsible tourism should
benefit and respect local communities. They possess a firm commitment to
minimally impact the environment, while providing customers with a safe, reliable and friendly travel experience that is enhanced through convenient and innovative adventure travel options. They strive to offer personalized service and individual attention in every facet of the customers'
experience, from the reservation process to completion of the tour.

In an effort to protect the earth’s depleted resources and battle global warming, Costa Rica Nature Adventures sets aside a percentage of their revenue to purchase and protect a small portion of primary rainforest in the Pacuare area. In December 2006, Lonnie and Eric will be making a special presentation about the expedition at their Pacuare Lodge. Check out their exemplary commitment to minimal impacts and sustainability.

Renewable Energy Long Island: The expedition's renewable energy partner

RELI seeks public participation in energy policy decisions to encourage energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources, and to protect our environment, economy, and public health.

" Lonnie and Eric's courageous expedition and fascinating dispatches from the top of the world are a Mayday call to the whole world.  My hope is that the One World Expedition will serve as a wake up call and alert the American public that polar ice caps and ancient glaciers are melting at a rapid rate as a result of our ever-increasing consumption of fossil energy sources.

"The good news is that we now have renewable energy technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines that allow us to use energy without emitting climate-changing greenhouse gases.  That is why it is so fitting that the expedition's communications equipment is powered with solar panels." Gordian Raacke, RELI's executive director.

Canoes in the Arctic?

While evidence of a rapidly changing climate has first appeared in Arctic regions, this is definitely an issue that affects us all. Can you imagine a more powerful image to portray the dramatic effects of global climate change than two canoes floating in the middle of the Arctic Ocean a place that most people envision as completely frozen? The One World Expedition cannot.

At the North Pole, lines of longitude begin, grow and extend south through every nation on the planet. Desolate and delicate, the Arctic Ocean is where the world unites. The One World Expedition's mission is to play at least a small part in uniting the world to protect this pristine environment and to better understand global climate change.

What You Can Do

In the upcoming months the goal of our expedition will depart from documenting changes due to global warming to providing real world solutions.  Being energy efficient is a good start, but we need to do more than that and we need to do it now.  Join our efforts to reduce worldwide carbon emissions. You can make a difference.

1. Demand Clean Energy from our leaders.
2. Get involved. (Try becoming a Greenpeace e-activitst.)
3. Be in the know - stay informed.
4. Buy clean energy.
5. Be energy efficient.

Check back frequently for more information on what you can do to reduce carbon emissions.

Current Data

NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) published the following information. "The 2002 meteorological year is the second warmest year in the period of accurate instrumental data (since the late 1800s). The global surface temperature for 12 months from December 2001 through November 2002 is 0.51°C above the climatological mean (1951-1980 average) in the GISS analysis, which uses meteorological station measurements over land and satellite measurements of sea surface temperature over the ocean."
