Summer vacation of mammoth proportions

Two guys from Grand Marais came face to face with a polar bear last week while they were sleeping in a tent on their summer vacation.
Though members of this species have been making news for going remarkably off-course in their search for food, Minnesotans may be relieved to know the polar bear was not seen on the Gunflint Trail. Instead, it was just a mile from the North Pole.
It came to sniff out the campsite of Lonnie Dupre and Eric Larsen, who just became the first Arctic explorers to reach the North Pole during summer.
"Yesterday, we were searching for meaning and not finding it," they wrote about the polar bear encounter in their expedition Web log at www.oneworld expedition.com. "This morning it walked within 60 inches of us."

One World Expedition's partnership with ACR Electronics. The team will be using ACR's TerraFix 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon.
On November 13 and 14, the expedition was featured on Ron Schara's Minnesota bound as well as Belinda Jensen's Morning Program on Kare 11, the NBC affiliate in Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Paddler magazine feature a short description of the expedition in their November/December 2004 issue.
Pati Holmen helped arrange for this story to be run when the team visited Lapham Peak State Park outside of Milwaukee. It appeared in the Waukesha Freeman on November 11 2004.

"Last Arctic Mystery." Creative Touch films in London recently released a documentary about Lonnie's Greenland Expedition for National Geographic. Titled the "Last Arctic Mystery," it details his 6,500-mile journey around the world's largest island. The documentary is currently airing in Europe and Oceania.
